Inside the Great Pyramid of Giza and Across the Plateau
Cairo, 이집트

With the casing stones gone, the Great Pyramid is 230 metres of bare stepped limestone, and the people at its base read as specks. Plateau entry is 700 ج.م, paid by card or pre-booked online since April 2026. Private cars no longer drive onto the sand.

Inside Khufu

You enter the Great Pyramid of Giza (Giza Plateau) through a small dark hole low on the north face, the forced Al-Ma'mun breach. From there the Grand Gallery climbs single file and stooped, hands on knees, through still hot air, and it ends in an empty granite room.

The interior is a separate ticket at 1,500 ج.م on top of plateau entry, and the daily allocation is capped. A large group cannot go up as one party. Split it and climb in waves.

For the money you get the climb and the room, both unlit, both empty. Keep the 1,500 ج.م for the exterior and for Khafre if a hands-on-knees scramble in airless heat sounds like the wrong half of your day.

The Fayoum Road gate and the shuttles

The Giza Plateau Grand Entrance & Visitor Centre (Fayoum Road gate) is a low, desert-coloured building on the plateau's south side, with card ticket machines under a canopy, a rank of green-and-white electric shuttles outside and pyramid silhouettes on the ridge behind. Student entry is 350 ج.م, and the shuttle ride is included in every ticket. Tour buses drop at the gate.

This gate replaced the old Mena House entrance. Your ticket is single-entry, so leaving the plateau for lunch means paying to come back.

Khafre and the Sphinx

Pyramid of Khafre, Cairo
Pyramid of Khafre, Cairo

Pyramid of Khafre still carries a cap of smooth polished white Tura limestone casing at its apex. It stands on higher bedrock and looks taller than Khufu. It is the open pyramid on the Supreme Council of Antiquities' maintenance rotation, and Menkaure's interior is closed under the same rotation.

The interior costs 280 ج.م on top of plateau entry. The burial chamber is better preserved than the room at the top of Khufu, the queue is far shorter, and visitors go in in small batches.

Great Sphinx of Giza & Valley Temple of Khafre comes with plateau entry. The approach runs through the Valley Temple, past huge piers cased in red granite and across an alabaster floor, and that walk-through deserves as much of your time as the Sphinx itself. You then see the Sphinx from a terrace set back from the paws, its nose missing, Khafre's pyramid rising directly behind it. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for both.

Panorama Point

Panorama Point is the first stop on the shuttle loop, an open desert ridge southwest of the complex with tyre tracks and loose sand underfoot. All three great pyramids and the small queens' pyramids stack into a single frame from here. Camels and horses wait in a marked holding area, and the shuttle reaches the view, so you do not need to hire one. A ride costs extra and the price is negotiable. Agree it in writing first, or decline politely.

Best time to go

Buy the Khufu interior ticket as your first move. The allocation is capped and reportedly sells out early in the day. Get to the Sphinx terrace early as well, since it is a bottleneck at peak hours and coach parties queue for the one good photo angle.

Eat lunch inside the gate. The two plateau restaurants serve breakfast and lunch and stop mid-afternoon, and nothing up there runs into the evening.

Winter is the season for the desert sites south of Giza. Dahshur opens 08:00 to 16:00 from October to April and shortens its hours during Ramadan. Private guided half-day tours of the plateau run every day of the week.

Is it worth going inside

Going inside Khufu suits a visitor who wants the granite room itself and can manage a stooped climb in hot, still air. Everybody else gets more from Khafre's chamber, the Valley Temple and an hour on the ridge at Panorama Point.

Eating on the plateau

Khufu's, Cairo
Khufu's, Cairo

Khufu's is inside the archaeological grounds, a low stone-and-glass pavilion with linen-set terrace tables and the Great Pyramid filling the whole view behind the diners. Chef Mostafa Seif's kitchen was named best restaurant in the Middle East and North Africa in 2026. It serves breakfast and lunch, last orders at 15:00, and you need a plateau ticket to reach the door. The room runs on reservations, and nobody is hurried through a meal. Book by phone or email. It is ج.مج.مج.مج.م.

9 Pyramids Lounge is an open wooden Bedouin-style deck with scattered floor cushions and low tables, sand underfoot, and nine pyramids strung across the desert horizon in front of you. Mezze and grills, mains 90 to 350 ج.م on top of plateau entry. It opens 09:00 to 15:30. The shuttle drops close by, near the Panorama area. Reserve by phone.

Pyramid views outside the gate

The Pizza Hut & KFC pyramid-view terrace (4 Abu El Hol Square) is one ordinary fast-food block on a busy traffic square, KFC below and Pizza Hut's balcony above, plastic chairs and trays on the upper floor. You look straight across the road at the Sphinx with Khafre's pyramid behind it. It is cheap, air-conditioned and walk-in, ج.م, and it holds the best view of the Sphinx in Giza that costs you nothing beyond a drink, the evening light show included. Terrace seats are first-come and fill fast at sunset.

Great Pyramid Inn (Nazlet El-Semman) does the same thing from the Akemi rooftop, five minutes' walk from the Sphinx gate. Wooden tables and awnings sit among satellite dishes and water tanks, with the Sphinx's head and all three pyramids lined up over the rooftops. You can watch the light show from the terrace at no charge. This is a small guesthouse, too small for a coach party, so call ahead. ج.مج.م.

Marriott Mena House, Cairo sits in 40 acres of gardens, a Khedival-era building with carved Moorish woodwork and mashrabiya inside, its terrace and pool ringed by palms and the Great Pyramid rising immediately behind. The 139 Pavilion terrace serves non-residents breakfast, lunch and dinner at ج.مج.مج.م. The historic Palace wing is closed for a multi-year restoration ahead of a JW Marriott rebrand. The garden wing, grounds and restaurants run normally.

Sound & Light Show at the Giza Pyramids runs nightly at Abu El Hol Square under Misr Company for Sound, Light and Tourism Development. The Sphinx is washed in red and blue, projected imagery slides across the pyramid faces, and the tiered seating is open to the desert night. Tickets start at 400 ج.م, with premium seating higher. Sessions rotate through English, French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese and Russian. Check which language is scheduled for your night before you book.

Dinner after the plateau

Andrea El Mariouteya turns rows of whole chickens and quail over open charcoal at the entrance, and women slap flatbread into clay ovens beside them. The chicken is marinated in oregano, and the bread is baked in front of you. A long table of mezze comes with it, and the garden has shaded trellises and water features. The kitchen has been a Giza institution for 40 years. It seats big tables indoors and out, and it is ج.مج.م.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum has been fully open since November 2025. The façade is a vast triangle of translucent alabaster cut with chevron patterns. Inside, the Ramses II colossus stands in the atrium, and a monumental staircase lined with statues climbs to a glass wall that frames the pyramids. Admission covers the Tutankhamun galleries and Khufu's cedar solar boat, which was moved here from the museum beside the Great Pyramid before that building was demolished. Adult entry is 1,450 ج.م and a child ticket is 730 ج.م. On-site ticket sales closed in December 2025. Book online for a two-hour slot. Schools and group parties book through [email protected] and [email protected].

Saqqara, Dahshur and the stables at Abusir

Saqqara Necropolis & Imhotep Museum is 40 minutes south, and the six-tiered Step Pyramid of Djoser there is the oldest pyramid in the world, standing above a colonnaded limestone entrance hall and the wide Heb-Sed court where desert sand meets a belt of palm trees. Hours are 08:00 to 17:00 in winter. Entry is 600 ج.م for a foreign adult and 300 ج.م for a student. The Djoser interior is 200 ج.م extra, and the Imhotep Museum is included. Three hours is the realistic minimum for the complex and a few tombs. The painted tombs admit small numbers at a time.

Dahshur Pyramids (Red Pyramid & Bent Pyramid), Cairo
Dahshur Pyramids (Red Pyramid & Bent Pyramid), Cairo

Dahshur Pyramids hold the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, two enormous smooth-sided pyramids standing alone in empty desert with almost nobody around, the Bent one visibly changing angle halfway up and its original casing stones still clinging on. Entry is 200 ج.م and each pyramid interior is 100 ج.م, the best-value interior climb in Egypt. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for both. Facilities are limited, so carry water.

KFB Stables (Abusir entrance) keeps Arabian horses in a sandy yard beside the Abusir pyramids and has a second yard near Giza. Rides run from one hour to a full day, out to Saqqara, Dahshur and the Giza plateau, charged by the hour at ج.مج.م. The yard takes riders of all abilities, stays open 24/7 and books by phone. Booking a known stable ahead keeps you clear of the on-site camel and horse touts. At sunset the ride strings out across open desert with the Giza pyramids low on the horizon.

Planning notes

Book the museum's timed slot and the Khufu interior ticket before anything else, and bring a card for the gate. Menkaure stays shut under the maintenance rotation, the plateau kitchens close mid-afternoon, and your plateau ticket lets you in once.

See the Cairo guide and the Cairo hotel search.
